Worn chain gypsies may cause your chain to jump on the gypsy, particularly under high loads. This can be both disconcerting and dangerous. It may also render your anchor winch useless. Replacement of a worn chain gypsy is the best way to maintain proper meshing and correct operation of your windlass.
Identification of your windlass gypsy or chain wheel is important. Chain gyspies are not universal i.e. one gypsy does not suit all chain types. Different chain types such as Short Link PWB, Shortlink DIN 766, A Chain, BBB Chain and High Test chain require different gypsies to cater for the particular chain dimensions for each.
Most chain gypsies have an identification stamp.
If you are unsure of your chain wheel/gypsy identification, you must acurately identify your chain.
It is important to measure your chain as acurately as possible with verniers to be sure of matching with the correct gypsy. There are also a number of chains marketed as a standard size which do not conform to that standard.
